Exhibition at Ruhr Museum Essen
Coal washing plant, 24-meter level
Gelsenkirchener Strasse 181 | 45309 Essen
until October 31, 2021
"Parallel to the special exhibition 'We are from here. Turkish-German Life 1990. Photographs by Ergun Çağatay', designs for an immigration monument at Zollverein will be presented on the 24-meter level of the Coal Washing Plant from June 21 to October 31, 2021. Here, the Zollverein Foundation is taking up an idea put forward by Michelle Müntefering, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office. At the 14th European Cultural Brands Award 2019, also at Zollverein, Müntefering formulated in her greeting: 'To honor the achievements of these people, their children and their children's children, it would be a good gesture if we erected a monument here in our midst to these people who have long since become part of our country.'
The monument will be dedicated to people from all nations who came to Germany to find work. The presentation curated by Dr. Necmi Sönmez shows the designs of six contemporary artists: Ulf Aminde (Berlin) & Manuel Gogos (Bonn), Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt (Frankfurt am Main), Claus Föttinger (Düsseldorf), missing icons (Hamburg), Nasan Tur (Berlin) and Iskender Yediler (Berlin). Visitors are invited to comment on and discuss the designs. A renowned jury will evaluate them in late summer. The presentation will serve as the basis for the further steps towards a monument to labor migration to Germany at Zollverein."
